Rahman Vahabzadeh, an investment company executive, and his wife, Lyra, left Greenwich Village 11 years ago in search of the usual suburban amenities: bigger closets, gardening opportunities, rambling room for future children and dogs. In Rye, N.Y., the houses were too small and tightly packed to their taste; in Greenwich, Conn., the couple were put off by dark, winding streets even on sunny afternoons.
